GARRETT'S TOP FIVE PRACTICE TIPS
FOR VIOLIN AND VIOLA
1. Get to know the score before picking up the instrument. Locate the main voice in each passage - know how your part fits in. Look for the important harmony changes. Formulate your ideas about the music - sing it, speak it!

2. Start your preparation far in advance of the performance so you can practice patiently and mindfully, then take a break for a week or two and work on a different piece, then return with a fresh perspective.

3. Practice slowly while conserving energy, building beautiful intonation and phrasing from the very start. Stay conscious and creative in your repetitions - every rep is a performance!

4. Have an intention each time you put the bow to the string. What are your starting and stopping points? What sound are you going for? Pause, Breathe, Imagine, Play!

5. When you are well prepared, practice playing from beginning to end without stopping. When you feel ready, practice performing for a small audience: a recording device, a friend, several friends, your friend's friends, etc. When the big day comes, you will be ready!
TEACHING
Through the study of music we can become more attuned to beauty in the world around us.

Garrett teaches intermediate and advanced middle school and high school students, mentors young professionals, and coaches accomplished adult amateurs who love to play simply for the value music brings to their life.

As a teacher, Garrett nurtures each individual’s creativity, while fostering conscious, purposeful, and efficient strategies for use in the practice room. His students feel empowered to become their own best teacher, crafting meaningful and compelling musical performances.

As a member of the MET Orchestra, Garrett has learned from the styles of great singers past and present, and strives to imbue string playing with the expressiveness of the human voice.

Having won auditions for three major orchestras during his career, and also adjudicated auditions for the MET Orchestra, Garrett can offer insightful and effective audition coaching.

A frequent adjudicator at Juilliard Pre-College, and a former college division faculty member at Mannes School of Music for seven years, Garrett guides his students toward the realization of their goals. His students have won scholarships to major music schools, and positions in well-known orchestras around the world.

Garrett’s teaching is informed by a variety of pedagogies; his own private teachers were pupils of Paul Rolland, Ivan Galamian, Oscar Shumsky, D.C Dounis, David Oistrakh, Ilona Feher, and Efrem Zimbalist.

A member of ASTA, MTNA, CMS, NAfME, NYSSMA, NJMEA, CMA, and ACMP, Garrett
offers online violin and viola lessons, as well as chamber music and audition coaching at Lessonface.com and tonerow.com.
